Personal, object, reflexive and possessive pronouns.
Receiving the action
An object pronoun replaces the person or thing affected by an action.
It normally comes after the verb.
English has seven core object forms.
After a verb
Use the object form after a verb: know him, help her, invite us.
The object can be direct or indirect: Give me the key.
You and it have the same subject and object spelling, but their sentence job still changes.
- Subject + verb + object pronoun
- We know her.
- Please help us.
After a preposition
Use object pronouns after prepositions such as for, with, to, from, about and between.
The English object form may differ from the form used in another language.
With names and other pronouns
Keep the object form when it is joined to a name or another pronoun: The teacher spoke to Mia and me.
A useful test is to remove the other name: The teacher spoke to me.
Do not repeat the same object unnecessarily: I saw him, not I saw him Daniel.
